The 2023 Outside Counsel Rankings: The Top Law Firms According To In-House Counsel
These are the law firms clients rely on most.
We are pleased to announce the release of our sixth annual ranking of the Top Outside Counsel in partnership with our friends at Lake Whillans. To compile this list of the nation’s top law firms, we turned to the folks who know best — the in-house lawyers who hire them.
ATL’s Outside Counsel Rankings are based not on deal volume, partner profits, or size of firm, but on the aspect most fundamental to a law firm’s business — what their clients think of them. This year, approximately 600 in-house lawyers shared their evaluations of their companies’ outside law firms.
The premise of our survey is simple and direct. We asked two questions: 1) “Which law firms does your company engage for legal services?” and 2) “Please indicate the highest level legal work for which your company will engage the particular firm(s).” The levels of work were defined along a four-point scale:
- Cost-efficient, bulk tasks
- Routine matters
- High-value, complex matters
- “Bet-the-company” matters
The ratings for each firm were averaged and the law firms with the highest average scores made it into our list of the Top Outside Counsel. Check out the results here.
